Cars

Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt
Directed by John Lasseter

In what is definately the best film of the year so far, the blood, sweat and tears from Pixar's crew has produced yet another visually breathtaking movie with a bank vault solid storyline.

The enjoyment begins before the film even starts, as theatre audiences are treated to a screening of Pixar's animated short, One Man Band, which features two competing one man bands in a medieval town square vying for one little girl's penny.

Cars is set in a world where everyone is a car, even the flies that buzz around deserted buildings. Our protagonist is Lightning McQueen, the rookie race car voiced by the great Owen Wilson. Already on the road to fame and fortune, all McQueen needs to do is win the Piston Cup championship to seal the deal. After disastrously blowing out two tires on the last lap of the final race, McQueen still manages to limp to the finish, creating a three way tie between himself, veteran racer The King and sleazy stock car Chick Hicks. As a result, a tie-breaker race to be held in Los Angeles is called to decide the championship. On his way across the desert, McQueen gets lost and stranded in a dusty town bypassed years ago when Interstate 40 was built. It is here where McQueen meets the eccentric residents of Radiator Springs and where the meat of the movie takes place.

Car fans will certainly enjoy Lightning McQueen's potent engine sounds and exhaust notes as well as voice talent provided by Michael Schumacher, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Mario Andretti among others. With Pixar's signature tight plot, no loose ends are left untied at the end of this heartwarming story about friendship and reconciliation. The opening sequence of Cars shows off some absolutely amazing graphics, with every curve, shine and detail on Lightning McQueen rendered so real I can't believe it's fake. All in all, Pixar never fails to blow the audience away with ingenious and original films and Cars is no different. Kachow!!
