Escape From Hong Kong Island

Jordan Chan, Chapman To
Directed by Simon Loui

A cute little film, Escape From Hong Kong Island is about a sleazy manager trying to get from HK Island to Kowloon. On his way to work, Raymond (Jordan Chan) flips off a young man asking for a few bucks because he needs to cross the harbor and spits a wad of gum into a beggar's change tin. The soundtrack makes it very obvious that Raymond is asking for "it." When he gets to work, he finds a termination letter. Well, being fired from his job is no big deal becaue he's got an offer from a rival company whose headquarters is in Kowloon, whereas Raymond's current location is Hong Kong Island. Raymond and the boss cuss each other out, Raymond storms out of the office and immediately calls his soon to be new boss, who assures him everything is fine and dandy as long as he can get to the office to sign the contract by a specific time. And thus begins the meat of the movie when Raymond gets mugged in a dank alley behind his (former) workplace. With no more company car, no money for public transportation, and no ID to get money out of the bank, Raymond tries myriad things just to scrounge together a few bucks to get the hell across the harbor and to his new job. Chapman To plays a policeman who appears and reappears in strategic moments to make Raymond's life worse as the day progresses. Although not very realistic, this film is a winner for slight exaggeration and pure entertainment value.
