Will Smith, Alice Braga
Starring Will Smith and based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same title, I Am Legend serves up a healthy dose of big budget spectacularity balanced by an extremely cohesive script and another awesome performance that validates Smith's mega-stardom. We are introduced to Robert Neville's predicament through a series of flashbacks that chronicle how our world has become overrun by savage zombie-like creatures who can only function at night. As such, Robert only ventures out during the day, meticulously keeping track of how long he can stay exposed. At night he barricades himself and his beloved dog inside his home behind layers of armour, an assault rifle at his side and waits for daylight to relieve the terror. The brand of fear and loneliness as portrayed in I Am Legend is not your typical run of the mill shriekfest. Rather, this film is an exploration into isolation and the emotions that one goes through as a result of living in a desolate wasteland with no normal human contact whatsoever. Most of the drama stems from one's attachment to Neville as he works tirelessly day in and day out to understand and find a cure for the frightful disease that has wiped out humanity as we know it. Despite seemingly endless setbacks, Neville never gives up hope that one day he will find the breakthrough he needs to cure the infected and give the world a chance to recover. |
